One therapy. One global effort.

Families in more than a dozen countries are raising money for the same thing: the SPG52 gene therapy program at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Wherever you give, it goes to that work. Choose the path that fits where you live.

In the United States

Give through Leo's Light

Donations in the US go through Leo's Light, a fund of the Rare Village Foundation, a Texas 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 83-4699994). Every gift is made to the Rare Village Foundation with the program designation "Leo's Light".

  • Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and you receive a receipt from the Rare Village Foundation.
  • Rare Village keeps no administrative fee (0%, under the fiscal sponsorship agreement), and the giving platform charges no platform fee.
  • The payment processor deducts a card fee of about 4.6% plus 30 cents, which you can choose to cover at checkout.
  • Funds are released to the SPG52 gene therapy program at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona on Leo's Light's documented request.

Anywhere in the world

Give directly to the university

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona runs its own public crowdfunding page for the SPG52 gene therapy program. Donations go straight to the research group. The page is in Catalan, Spanish and English, and accepts cards from any country.

  • Direct to the lab, with the university's own receipt.
  • Donors resident in Spain may be eligible for Spanish tax relief; the UAB page explains the terms.
  • The same page carries the program's official updates.

Fundraise in your country

Several families run their own foundations or fundraising pages for the program, in their own language and with their own tax rules. Each one is listed here only after it has approved its listing.

We are confirming listings with family foundations in Spain, Romania, Poland and Germany. Each will appear here once it has approved its entry. Until then, the two paths above are open to everyone.

Other ways to help

  • Share the research, not the sadness. Send a clinician the clinicians page; send a family the first 90 days.
  • Ask your employer about matching gifts. Many US employers match donations to 501(c)(3) charities; the Rare Village Foundation receipt is what they need.
  • Join the registry if your child has SPG52. Data is what makes a trial possible.
